Share on Twitter Share on Facebook 3 min readSeason 2's first episode of the PokerStars Big Game on Tour, released on Saturday, was all about Jennifer Tilly's heater.
The Hollywood actress and high-stakes poker regular didn't just dominate the table. She was the only player who turned a profit. Each player started with $50,000 in the $100/$200 ($200 big blind ante) no-limit hold'em cash game.
Former lawyer and current Minnesota resident Jordan Handrich is the first Season 2 "Loose Cannon," which means she's in the game for free. But she can't cash out unless she turns a profit across 150 hands.
Handrich, who arrived at Resorts World in Las Vegas to play poker along with her service dog, made an immediate impression against a table full of pros and celebrities who are accustomed to playing at these stakes. She raised the first hand preflop with pocket kings but didn't get any action, and then raised the flop in the next hand with top pair to force the bluffing Tilly off six-high.
The early hand against the Loose Cannon was one of the few pots Tilly lost in Episode 1. The heater started a few hands into the show against footballer Gerard Pique.
Tilly raised preflop with 9♦5♦and received a call from Pique, who was in the big blind with K♣Q♠. The flop came out 2♦J♦7♦, Pique checked king-high with no diamond before calling a bet of $700.
After the 6♦appeared on the turn, Tilly's nine-high flush wasn't looking so hot. Both players checked to see the A♥on the river. They checked it once again and the small pot went Tilly's way.
Tilly did have a misstep against Griffin Benger in a $12,000 pot when she couldn't pull the trigger on a river bluff with queen-high and allowed her opponent to take it down with a small pair. But then her luck turned around.
The second biggest hand came in a four-way pot. Tilly raised from an early position with J♠5♠to $600. Benger called from the cutoff with 6♦4♦before Sam Grafton, who was on the button with A♦Q♣, three-bet to $3,000. Pique, in the small blind with 10♥10♣, called. Andre Akkari, the big blind, folded, but the others who were already in the pot called.
The flop came out 2♠A♠6♠, another flopped flush for Tilly. Action checked to Grafton, who decided to check his top pair. The 7♥on the turn locked it up for Tilly. She bet $4,000, only receiving a call from Grafton.
Tilly would then check the 8♠on the river, concerned Benger rivered a superior flush. He didn't, and he checked, so she scooped a $20,400 pot. Benger and Tilly would tangle again moments later with the latter rivering a straight and getting a small value bet paid off against third pair.
In another pot, this one against the Loose Cannon on a board of 9♥7♣A♣10♠J♠and $6,300 in the middle, Tilly hit another straight with A♥8♣. She bet $2,000 for value, putting her opponent in a tough spot getting 4-1 on her money.
Handrich pondered her decision with third pair on a wet board. She then informed the audience that she felt she had picked up a tell on the Bride of Chuckystar, thinking she'd just caught Tilly bluffing. But, upon making the call, she found out her intuition was incorrect.
The biggest pot of the first episode came right at the end — $74,400 — with, you guessed it, Tilly taking it down when she hit a three-outer on the river against Pique.
Player | Chip Stack | Profit/Loss |
---|---|---|
Jennifer Tilly | $91,300 | $41,300 |
Gerard Pique | $47,800 | ($2,200) |
Andre Akkari | $45,700 | ($4,300) |
Griffin Benger | $43,700 | ($6,300) |
Jordan Handrich | $42,000 | ($8,000) |
Sam Grafton | $54,500 | ($20,500) |
Tilly finished the episode after 34 hands played with a $41,300 profit. Pique was the second top performer, but still ended up down $2,200. Handrich, the Loose Cannon, lost $8,000, which means she'll need to win more than that over the next 116 hands or she will go home with $0.
