The prisoners were subjected to cruel and inhumane working conditions in the adjacent limestone quarry. The prison was closed and abarummy mordenndoned after Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, leaving a bleak & eerie reminder of its troubled past. Today, tourists can explore the prison's deteriorating structures and collapsing walls, which emanate a depressing and hopeless vibe.
