The history of rummy games is intricate, spanning several centuries and continents. Although its precise roots are unknown, rummy is thoughtrummymate to have originated from a mashup of European and Asian card games. Spanish playing cards were used to play a game called Conquian in 19th-century Mexico, which is where the origins of rummy can be found. Later on, this game made its way to the US and became known as Gin Rummy.
